Frequently Asked Hair Questions

How do I pick a hair style that fits my face?

Look in the mirror with your hair swept off your face to help determine the shape of your face. If your face is LONG chose a style that will shorten the length of your face. Bangs, fullness at the sides or a medium to short length bob will help. For a ROUND face you want to add length to your face. To do this, choose a haircut that will add height on the top of the head and be close at the sides. If your face has a DIAMOND shape, choose a style with bangs and fullness at the lower part of your face. For a HEART shaped face, a soft, long bang swept to the side with fullness at the lower part of the face. For a SQUARE face, an off-center part, with a long bang and then tuck the hair behind your ears or draw the sides up from your ears. An OVAL shaped face is able to have almost any option. Remember when choosing a style your goal is to try and give the illusion of an oval shape.

Hair Texture

When choosing a style from a magazine make sure your hair is the same texture as the model, or ask your professional stylist if a chemical service can be done to change the texture of your hair.

Hair Color

Color can add dramatic definition to a style. It can also be a great accent, or be used to add volume to fine hair. Always consult a professional colorist before making a decision on any chemical service.

Lifestyle

Before making a final decision on your new style find out what the upkeep will be. Is it a style that requires a lot of blow-drying? Does this style need to be curled with an iron, hot rollers or a wet set? Is it a wash and wear style? Can you style your hair by yourself? Being able to style your hair like the picture you have chosen should be a very important part of your decision when choosing a style.

To straighten frizzy or curly hair

Start with a professionally recommended moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Leave your hair up in a towel for 5-15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Avoid vigorous rubbing with a towel as that will break the hair and cause the broken hairs to “frizz”. After 5-15 minutes of allowing the towel to absorb the excess water, take your hair down and begin combing from the bottom up. If your hair is tangled use a leave-in conditioner to help with the tangles, avoid aggressive combing as it too will stretch and break the hair. If you have the time, let your hair air-dry at this point for 10 minutes. Apply an anti-frizz or straightening balm to your hair and distribute evenly through the hair. Bend at the waist with your head “upside down” and brush your hair forward while blow-drying. While your hair is still damp, but not soaking wet, stand upright again and section the hair off starting at the nape. Using a boar bristle brush take a two-inch section at the nape of the hair and stretch the hair out straight while blow-drying. A round brush will give you a bend at the end of the hair. When this section is dry, take another section down and repeat. Always remember to start at the nape and work your way up the head. (Like laying bricks). This takes practice so be patient.

To enhance naturally curly or permed hair:

Shampoo and condition with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Be sure the product is not too “heavy” for your hair or it will weigh your curls down. Leave your hair wrapped in a towel to remove excess moisture for 5 -15 minutes depending upon the thickness of your hair. Remove the towel and begin combing out tangles, starting at the bottom of the hair. When this is complete apply curl activator to your hair. Then begin diffusing (the technique of drying one’s hair with a diffuser attached to the hair dryer). For maximum curl, scrunch the hair with your fingers as you diffuse. For a softer look just let the diffuser do the work as it dries the hair.

To control curly hair

Shampoo and condition with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Apply a light leave-in conditioner to help with combing tangles out of the hair. Then apply a liberal amount of “anti-frizz” cream to the hair and distribute that evenly throughout your hair. Let your hair air-dry naturally. An anti-humectant pomade can also be added to your hair to seal it and help keep airborne moisture out.

To add volume

Shampoo with a volume enhancing shampoo and use a light finishing rinse. Leave hair wrapped in a towel for 5 minutes to remove excess moisture from the hair. Comb tangles out of the hair. Apply a volume enhancing mousse to the root area of your hair. Bend at the waist with your head “upside down” and begin drying your hair from the roots to the tips while brushing the hair with a vented brush. Be sure and lift the hair away from the scalp to maximize volume. Stand straight again and begin to section the hair, (take a two-inch section of the hair and wrap the ends around a round brush). Lift the brush high while directing the airflow towards the roots. This will give you maximum volume. Continue working up the head in this manner.

To style thick, coarser hair

Shampoo hair with a gentle everyday shampoo. Condition with a medium weight conditioner. Let your hair air-dry to gently remove as much moisture in the hair as possible. Then apply a gel with a glossifier in it to give you the maximum hold with shine. Always start drying at the nape of the head. Section off a one-inch thick section and wrap the hair around a metal round brush. Think of the brush as a roller when doing this step. Direct air flow on to the hair on the brush. This will give you a tight smooth curl. Continue working your way around the head until all the hair is dry

To give hair a special look

After your hair has been dried, spray the hair with a heat-shielding spray. Then set your hair in hot rollers or use a curling iron to strategically curl a few spots around your face. After hair is cool run your fingers through your hair and tousle your curls. Mist hair with a medium hold finish spray.
